November 26, 2011 -- Sunrise at two temples at Abu Simbel (built by Ramses II), cruised past ruins of an old fortress at Kasr Ibrim, Amada (three structures moved here to escape lake flooding).
The next several photos were taken later in the morning, after retuning to the ship (and as the ship was pulling out). The departure from Abu Simbel was delayed because a member of the ship's crew had died during the night.
The "hills" that contain the two temples are artifical constructs. The temples were cut out of the original cliff face and moved (lifted) to these higher locations to prevent them from being flooded as the lake formed after the Aswan High Dam was built.
The pool of water at left (par tof Leke Nassar) is the approximate original location of this temple. There is a photo in the "Part II" gallery of a model in a museum in Aswan that illustrates the original and new locations of the two temples.
