26 Oct 2013 (Saturday) -- Anaheim CA

These photos are from Soouthern California stopovers on a trip to Australia and New Zealand in October and November 2013.

The primary over-the-ocean portion of the flight was a LAX-to-Sydney flight (and return) on Virgin Australia Airline, using frequent flyer miles accumulated on Delta Air Lines.
For several reasons, the Atlanta-to-California segment of the trip was done on separate Delta tickets, paid for with $ (not milesor points). Stayed two nights in California on the way out and one night there on the way back. The photos in this one-album gallery are from vistis to Linda's family members and friends during these two stopovers.

The following paragraphs are the "Information"pages prepared for the galleries containing photos for the Southern Hemisphere portion of this trip (with a small amount of editing to try to minimize confusion). At least some of the information that follows also applies to the photos in this album/gallery.

The trip involved a land segment in Australia, then a flight to New Zealand. The last portion of the trip was a Holland American Cruise from Auckland NZ, down the east coast of NZ, then across the Tasman Sea to stops at Hobart and Melbourne Australia, then ending at Sydney Australia.

The captions on each photo list the date in terms of “local time” (the day on the calendar at the place where the photo was taken). This is often different from the date actually placed by the camera on the image (and/or in the metadata associated with the image). The internal clock/calendars in the camera were left on South Carolina time throughout the trip. This was done intentionally. I figured there was a good chance that changing those internal clock/calendars could cause more problems than it would prevent (either I could mess up the revised setting or else forget to change them back at the end of the trip).

There tend to be three date/time combinations associated with each photo: (1) when it was taken; (2) when it was downloaded from the camera; and (3) when any revisions or edits were made to it (using photo editing software.

The photos are shown in approximately in chronological order. However, some are intentionally shown out order. This was done, for example, to group together photos of similar subjects – thereby avoiding “jumping around” from subject to subject.

I used two different cameras were used on the (and also obtained copies of some photos from others). The digital image file names for my two cameras were similar (and there is a chance that some filenames could be identical). To prevent mix-ups due to duplicate file name (and possible inadvertent image deletions) the original file names were altered to identify which camera was used (Canon A495 or Canon SX-40). Also, there were some glitches in the original file names (I somehow inadvertently reset the method used for setting the beginning number for sequential file names, which is another factor that could have led to duplicate file names). Only file names were changed. Metadata associated with the image file may still retain the original unaltered filename. The file names were changed using the Bulk Rename Utility by TGRMN Software).

In several cases, photos have been edited (for example to remove extraneous and possibly distracting items). In some cases, these edits removed the time/date stamp from the image. The edited photos generally have the letter “A” or “B” inserted at the end of the file name – or after the image number within the file name.

The captions also indicate where I was and (briefly) what I did during that day. These descriptions can sometimes be a bit misleading for days where I was in more than one location or did more than one thing.

Some photos have descriptions that provide additional information, background, insight, etc.

Some items in the general Introduction to the Photos section apply to these images.

This gallery and this introduction are being prepared in late January 2013. A trip log or journal is also being prepared at this time. It will be placed in the Writings section of this web site. My plan is to add both this gallery and the trip log to the web site within a few weeks of one another (with this gallery probably being added first).
