They have charts giving the history of the penguins we saw nesting near each observation shelter. The female at a nest near this particular shelter is named Donna. She has paired up with Doug almost every year, except for one where she paired up with John. I got the feeling that the guides (who I think are also "researchers," in that they collect the information on these charts) really LOVE to see who is going to pair up with who each year. As our guide was explaining this annual paring and switching around, I kind of flashed back to a memory of junior high girls gossiping down the malt shop -- but I'm giving away my age.
The other numbers on the chart for each year deal with how many eggs were laid, how many hatched, and how many survived to reach maturity (i.e., to leave the nest under their own power).
The charts that I photographed, and that appear here, are not necessarily the ones that were on the wall behind the guide in the earlier photo. (IMG_5183.SX40.JPG)
