These are weapons. The Maori tribes fought a lot of small wars with each other. Much of their fighting was apparently done with pairs of warriors standing toe to toe and bashing each other wiith these clubs.

Apparently they did not have bows and arrows, so the use of projectile weapons was limited until the began trading with Eurpoeans for muskets. There are some spears in this case. I'd think it would occur to someone that the spear could be thrown (a form of projectile weapon), but perhaps not.
