13 Nov 2013 (Wednesday) -- Napier NZ

Getting off the ship.

Napier was severely damaged in an earthquake around 1931. Much of New Zealand is in active seismic zones because of the proximity to a boundary between two tectonic plates (the boundary passes between the two major islands). The volcanic activity in Auckland (and elsewhere in New Zealand) is also due to the proximity to the plate boundary.

After the ~1931 quake, the downtown area was rebuilt in art deco style (a popular architectual style at that time -- Rockafeller Center in New York City was built in that style at about that time). The city now uses that cluster of buildings as a tourist draw. Several of the city cabs are ~1930-era cars (or perhaps reproductions of them). I believe they have a festival of some type each year associated with the art deco downtown. (IMG_5151.A495.JPG)
