12 Nov 2013 (Tuesday) – Unplanned Sea Day (Gisborne NZ landing cancelled)

This is the next day. Plan had been to stop at Gisborn on this day, then sail to Napier overnight. Gisborn did not have a large dock available, so tenders would have to be used to take people from ship to shore there. The weather and sea conditons were such that the captain felt it too hazardous to try to transfer people into the tenders. Thus we skipped Gisborn and entered Napier late that afternoon.

The first four Tuesday photos were taken after we docked in Napier.

Napier is inside a large bay: Hawkes Bay, I believe it is called. In this photo, you can see the next dock in the foreground and (on the horizon) the land that forms the north side of the bay.

The next dock is covered with logs. There was a container ship at that dock on this day. That container ship was apparently offloading containers. These logs had apparently been deployed there waiting for a different ship that came the next day to pick them up.

Logs are apparenlty a MAJOR New Zealand export. We saw similar masses of logs like this in two more ports -- at least two more. Was told most of these ports go to China, Korea, and Japan for use in making paper.(IMG_4767.SX40.JPG)
